Outdoor wear company Patagonia spent more than 10 years developing fully renewable rubber as a material for surfing wetsuits. Since 1930 wetsuits have been made with neoprene - a petrochemical derived from non-renewable crude oil. Some companies have also used limestone, another non-renewable material that requires tremendous energy to process.
in partnership with the Yulex company, Patagonia decided to make wetsuits from natural rubber. After several iterations of development, Patagonia partnered with the Forest Stewardship Council® to ensure that YULEX® was sourced only from plantations that preserve biodiversity and ecological integrity. Today, YULEX® natural rubber conforms to standards developed by the Forest Stewardship Council as certified by Preferred by Nature, ensuring that it doesn’t come from newly clear-cut rainforest, like some of the world’s supply.
Scubapro again is an industry leader i- adopting this planet-friendly material for its new Everflex Yulex Steamer wetsuits.
